Last carp of 2011

Well in the dying days of 2011 I managed to sneak out with a load of maggots and a rod I had been meaning to try out for a long time. I had bought myself a Hardy float rod in the sales before Xmas and with it came a Free center-pin. Now regular readers will know my fondness for center-pin fishing and catching hard fighting carp is more thrilling this way than any other way. I decided to fish Lizard fisheries near to the Thorney Weir complex as I figured that lake 1 offered he best chance of sport on the 31st of December. I started on maggot as it too is a proven winter catcher. The float was by Andrew Field ( who else) and was a porcupine quill that took 2 AAA.

I started confidently putting in a few handfuls of maggot and pellet but after a few hours it was just not happening. I concocted a new plan which was to fish 20 mins in each empty swim and then move to the next one. I started this technique in a swim where I had seen fish moving as I thought it might offer the best chance of success. However after another hour and a few swim changes it was lookign grim.

I then thought to move to a far swim which, though I hadnt seen any fish moving, was out of the wind :) and as luck would have it the fish had also decided that they preferred that corner too.

And there you have it, a low double figure common caught on my new rod and reel combo in the dying hours of 2011. Belated Happy New year everyone !
